Help & answers

Concrete questions, answered

Everything builders, contractors and site teams ask us most — volumetric concrete, delivery, grades, and our specialist sector work.

Volumetric concrete basics

What is volumetric concrete?

Volumetric concrete is mixed on your site by a mobile mixer that carries the raw materials separately. It is batched fresh at the point of pour, so you get exactly the grade and the volume you need, with nothing pre-mixed.

How is it different from a ready-mix drum wagon?

A drum wagon arrives pre-mixed — you pay for the whole load and race a 90-minute clock. Our volumetric truck mixes as you pour, so you pay only for what you use, there are no part-load charges, and there is no time pressure.

Do I really only pay for what I pour?

Yes. The truck meters every cubic metre mixed. If your job needs less than expected you simply stop — no full-load minimum and no charge for concrete you did not use.

Can I get more than one mix on a single delivery?

Yes. Because the materials are mixed on site, one truck can switch between grades and mixes on the same visit — handy when a job needs, say, a footing mix and a floor mix.

What concrete grade do I need?

Driveways and paths usually take C25, structural slabs and footings C30, commercial and heavy-duty work C35–C40. Tell us the job on the quote form and we will specify it for you.

Do you supply rapid-set concrete?

Yes — our URS (Ultra Rapid Set) mix reaches working strength in around two hours, ideal for time-critical work like rail, highways and out-of-hours jobs. Ask for it when you request a quote.

Out-of-Hours Concrete

How late will you actually batch?

We dispatch from depot up to 04:30 to hit 06:00 pours. Anything booked before 16:00 the day prior is confirmed in writing with driver name and ETA.

What does an out-of-hours pour cost vs daytime?

Out-of-hours premium is typically 15 to 25 percent on the cubic metre rate, depending on volume, distance and spec. Volumetric pricing means aborted pours don't blow the budget. You pay for discharge, not delivery.

Can you supply on a Network Rail possession?

Yes. We've poured on T-3 and T-12 possessions across the LNER and TransPennine networks. Drivers are inducted to each possession's site requirements. Let dispatch know on booking.

What if my pour overruns or the slot slips?

Volumetric trucks hold raw materials, not mixed concrete, so a two-hour slip costs you nothing. If you abort entirely, you pay for what came out of the chute up to the point of stop.

Do you cover airside works?

Yes. Leeds Bradford, Manchester, Doncaster Sheffield. Drivers airside-inducted and documentation issued ahead of the airside permit deadline.

What spec range can you batch at night?

C8 GEN1 through C40 designed mix, plus fibre-reinforced, foamed, screed, water-resistant and fast-set. Mix design signed off by the on-call batcher before dispatch.

Rail Concrete

How do your drivers meet possession requirements?

Our drivers are inducted to each possession's site requirements before the shift. Where the principal contractor requires specific competencies, escorts or briefings, dispatch arranges them ahead of the possession date.

What's the hand-back protocol if a pour slips?

We don't dispatch a load until the possession plan and mix design are locked. If site conditions change mid-pour, the on-call batcher reworks the slump or strength inside the truck. With URS in the mix, two-hour set buys back the time most overruns would cost.

Can you supply T-3 possessions, not just T-12?

Yes. Short-notice T-3 possessions are bookable up to 16:00 the day prior with mix design signed off by the on-call batcher.

How does Ultra Rapid Set work for ballasted track?

URS reaches working strength inside two hours, which means foundation pads, OLE bases and slab repairs can be poured at 02:00 and trafficable by first service. The mix is BS EN 206 compliant and signed off pre-dispatch.

Do you handle remote trackside access?

Volumetric trucks reach RRAPs and access points across LNER, TransPennine and East Midlands routes. Where the access calls for a smaller wagon or a long hose run, dispatch confirms on booking.

What about ballast contamination control?

Volumetric pours mix only what discharges, so spillage is minimal. Where the principal contractor requires bunded delivery or containment, dispatch arranges before the possession.

Airport Concrete

Are your drivers airside-inducted?

Yes. Drivers are inducted to the relevant airport's airside standard before the slot opens. Where induction is airport-specific (MAG, Heathrow, Birmingham), dispatch arranges the briefing on confirmation.

What about FOD control?

Volumetric trucks are FOD-checked at the gate. Loose plant and tools are secured before entry. Apron sweeps are arranged with airside ops if the pour profile calls for it.

Can URS meet airside surface specifications?

Yes. Ultra Rapid Set is a designed mix to BS EN 206 with strength gain to working level inside two hours. Where the spec calls for air entrainment, fibres, or specific surface tolerances, the on-call batcher signs off the design pre-dispatch.

Which airports do you cover?

Manchester, East Midlands and London Stansted are inside reasonable reach from our depots. We also cover Birmingham Airport, working alongside our partner MJS Construction. Local airports including Leeds Bradford, Doncaster Sheffield and Liverpool are inside 90 minutes.

How do escort vehicles get arranged?

Airside ops coordinates with dispatch on confirmation. The escort meets the truck at the airside gate. We don't move airside without an authorised escort.

What about jet blast resistance?

Mix designs for taxiway and apron pours are signed off against the spec, including jet blast and abrasion resistance where called for. Send the contractor's mix sheet and dispatch will confirm.

Highways Concrete

Can you pour through a TM plan?

Yes. Volumetric trucks work to the TM plan supplied by the principal contractor. Banksmen are briefed on the closure layout, traffic management protocols and the lane-return time before pour.

How does the lane-rental maths work for URS?

The URS premium on a typical 20 m³ pour is a fraction of a single hour of motorway lane-rental. Site agents who've worked it out tend to spec URS by default on time-critical closures.

Are your drivers carded for smart motorway works?

Yes. CHAS, SSIP and NRSWA cards plus the National Highways Passport are in date and visible at the gate. Where the principal contractor or framework adds additional inductions, dispatch arranges them on confirmation.

What's the response time on short-notice closures?

Closures booked before 16:00 the day prior are confirmed in writing with driver name and ETA. Same-day work is bookable through dispatch where the depot has capacity.

Can you supply sulfate-resistant or air-entrained mixes?

Yes. Designed mixes to BS EN 206 across the strength range, including sulfate-resistant, air-entrained, fibre-reinforced and fast-set. Send the spec and the on-call batcher will sign off before dispatch.

Do you cover National Highways frameworks?

We supply principal contractors on every major North West and Yorkshire framework. Send the call-off number and dispatch will price against the framework rates where applicable.

Utilities & Reinstatement

What is road foam?

Road foam is foamed concrete (also called foam concrete or CLSM) used to backfill and reinstate utility trenches. It is a lightweight, free-flowing material that self-levels and self-compacts, so the trench is filled and reinstated in one pour without a compactor.

Why use foamed concrete instead of Type 1 backfill?

Foamed concrete pours in one operation and needs no compaction or per-layer testing, which is faster and reduces the chance of settlement. It also digs out cleanly for future access, unlike compacted granular backfill.

What density can you mix?

We batch from low-density void fill through to higher-strength structural CLSM, to the exact density your reinstatement specification calls for. The on-site batcher signs off the mix before the pour.

Can you fill redundant pipes, sewers and tanks?

Yes. Free-flowing foamed concrete is ideal for grouting up redundant pipes, disused sewers, tanks and culverts. It finds and fills the void without compaction.

How quickly can you get to a streetworks site?

Booked before 16:00 the day prior, we confirm in writing with driver name and ETA. Same-day reinstatement is bookable through dispatch where the depot has capacity.

Housing & Residential Development

Do you supply housebuilders plot by plot?

Yes. We schedule supply to your plot sequence and meter every cubic metre, so each plot pays only for what it pours, with no part-load charge between plots.

Liquid screed or traditional screed for plots?

Liquid screed is a flowing, self-levelling screed that covers large floor areas fast and is ideal over underfloor heating. Traditional sand-cement screed suits smaller areas or where the spec requires it. We supply both and mix on site.

Is liquid screed good over underfloor heating?

Yes. Liquid screed flows around the UFH pipes and gives excellent thermal contact and an even, level finish, which is why it is the common choice for heated floors in new homes.

Can you match our build programme?

Dispatch builds the supply around your plot schedule and confirms each pour in writing with driver name and ETA, so the concrete keeps pace with the groundworks gang.

What grade do you supply for foundations?

C8 through C40 to BS EN 206 and BS 8500, batched on site to the engineer’s specification. The on-site batcher signs off the mix before the pour.

Domestic Concrete

Is there a minimum load?

No full-load minimum. Because we mix on site and meter the pour, you pay for the cubic metres you use, even on a small domestic job.

Can you get to a tight driveway or back garden?

Usually, yes. Our volumetric trucks reach access that a large drum wagon cannot, and the back chute places the concrete where you need it. Tell us about the access on booking and we will confirm.

What grade do I need for a driveway or extension?

Driveways and paths usually take C25, extension footings and structural work C30. Tell us about the job on the quote form and we will specify the grade for you.

How do I work out how much concrete I need?

Use our concrete calculator for a quick estimate, or tell us the dimensions and we will work it out. Because we mix on site, you are never charged for over-ordering.

Do you pour at weekends?

Yes. We pour weekdays, evenings and weekends. Local jobs can often be booked same day where the depot has capacity.
